My Golf Diary
In the summer of 1999 I made the fateful decision to purchase a set of golf clubs. It was the latest in a lifelong series of athletic adventures that included playing high school baseball and basketball, and in my adult life softball, racquetball, running, and cycling. But my interest in those activities never reached the level of addiction, enjoyment, frustration, elation, depression, and the myriad of other emotions that make up golf. If you play, you surely know what I mean.
After taking a few lessons, and hitting a few thousand balls on the range, I finally started playing regularly in April of 2000. Shot something close to 120 my first round but as I wrote on the Usenet newsgroup rec.sport.golf, a hacker was born. I've gone through periods of improvement, regression, and stagnation over the almost four years I've played now; however, I seem to be finally making some real improvement as of late. I spent a long time shooting primarily in the mid to high 90s with an occasional round below 90 and a few in the three digit arena. But as of this date (May 12, 2004) seven of my last nine rounds have been in the 80s including a best of 81. I attribute this mainly to putting in some time practicing my short game because I am still wildly inconsistent with my full swing. However, I know that I am risking angering the golf gods by writing this and my game could go to hell in no time.
I usually play every Sunday morning at the Gulf Winds Golf Course on the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas. I'll usually play on holidays and an occasional Saturday. Starting today I will be recording my scores here and writing a little blurb on my round. I maybe the only one who will ever read it, but hopefully it will be something I can look back on and see some improvement over time.
NOTE: Back in June I had trouble with my software. I would write up a new page but then it wouldn't save. So I gave up. It seems to be working now so I'm going to resume writing about my golfing experiences. The links below will give you an idea of what my game was like during a three month stretch in 2004. THE MONSOON HAS STRUCK!! As of today (Saturday, May 8), I haven't been able to play my normal Sunday round because we have had deluge after deluge each weekend since. This weekend is no different. I drove by the course today in between thunderstorms, and there is no way it will be playable tomorrow even if it stops raining tonight. Here is what it looked like outside my front door two weekends ago: The Flood
